Hilton: Are you wasting your weekends?

Research is part of a new marketing campaign

Almost half of people questioned in the UK by Hilton Hotels exaggerate what they do at weekends to impress others. The research is a thinly veiled part of a marketing effort to promote its annual winter discounts.

A lazy quarter of people interviewed stay in bed until 10:00 or later. Brits blow the budget at the weekend on shopping and takeaways that they later regret, with men revealed as the biggest spenders. The new research by Hilton concludes that Brits are wasting their weekends, with 23% admitting they feel unsatisfied with how they have spent those days off.

The study of more than 2,000 adults reveals that people are keeping their weekend frustrations a secret by lying about what they’ve been up to. Almost half (44%) exaggerate what they do when asked by friends or work colleagues – with the aim of appearing more exciting being the main reason (30%).

“The scores might have something to do with the fact that the research suggests we aren’t spending quality time with friends and family,” Hilton says in a press release, adding that 23% of those surveyed admitted not seeing friends at the weekend and 15% don’t usually meet up with family members.

“Our research shows that many people feel stuck in a rut when it comes to how they spend their weekends. We want to encourage people to treat their weekends like a bite-sized holiday,” said Aligi Gardenghi, Hilton Worldwide’s vice president of marketing for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. “Our Winter Sale – with up to 33% off hotel stays across Europe, Middle East and Africa throughout 2015 – is the perfect way to make sure your weekends count this year and create experiences you can be proud of, whether that’s a spring getaway or simply visiting friends and family closer to home.”
