Highly rated Danish aquarium may close

The attraction is popular but is haemorrhaging money
A popular Danish aquarium with increasing visitor numbers may be forced to close because of a lack of funds.
The saltwater aquarium, Øresundsakvariet, located close to Helsingør north of Copenhagen, is facing an uncertain future with registered losses of DKK 1.6 million (€220,000) last year.
The losses have so far risen to DKK 2.2 million this year – and are expected to rise to DKK 4.1 million by 2019.
The aquarium, which has consistently good ratings on TripAdvisor, is owned and run by Copenhagen University. The university is now warning it may now have to close the facility.
“The main tasks of a university are research and education, not running an aquarium. Ørsundsakvariet is on a slippery slope and we’re always on the brink of going under,” said aquarium chief Jens Peder Jeppesen.
