High-speed cycle lanes likely in Norway

Cyclists would be able to reach up to 40km/h
Transport authorities in Norway are proposing trials of new high-speed bike lanes in the country’s nine biggest cities. On these bicycle expressways, cyclists will be able to reach speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour.
The plans were presented recently as one of the initiatives of the country’s National Transport Plan. Oslo would get two expressways, other cities (Bergen, Trondheim, Nord-Jæren, Nedre Glomma, Buskerudbyen, Grenland, Kristiansand, Tromsø) one each.
This investment, totalling NOK 8 billion (€844 million), would keep personal transport emissions low in Norway’s cities. The aim is to have cycling make up between 10% and 20% of all daily trips in the nine biggest cities.
“The bicycle expressways are stretches that will really have an influence on transportation,” explained Terje Moe Gustavsen, director of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
