Construction begins on airport’s ‘west wing’ plaza
Construction has begun on the ‘west wing’ of Helsinki Airport, as part of a huge expansion of the terminal.
The west wing represents around €300 million of airport operator Finavia’s total investment of €900 million. The first part of the wing to be built is a large central plaza, which is scheduled to open in late 2018, bringing 25,000sqm of new passenger and baggage facilities to the airport.
“The magnificent central plaza will be used by departing and arriving long-haul passengers. Various facilities such as modern security control, shops, restaurants and new services will be located around the plaza,” said Ville Haapasaari, Finavia’s airport director and SVP.
The plaza will be an architecturally impressive space, he promised, decorated with Finnish wood with rugged wall and ceiling structures.
“Our aim is to establish a setting for an unforgettable and significant travel experience that lives long in the memory and strengthens the Helsinki Airport brand,” he explained.
However, investment decisions on the subsequent stages of the west wing’s development will be made later, Finavia said. The expansion program will proceed in stages “to manage risks [and] react to changes in market conditions in a flexible manner”.
