Two gunmen open fire at hotel near pyramids
Another sign of Egypt’s continuing battle with a jihadist insurgency since the military took power in July 2013 occurred yesterday when two gunmen opened fire at a hotel near the pyramids of Giza outside Cairo.
The attack happened as tourists – who included Israeli Arabs – were boarding a coach, but no casualties were reported and the gunmen were quickly arrested. Some damage was made to the Three Pyramids Hotel.
Militants in the country are based mostly in the Sinai Peninsula, killing hundreds of security personnel and civilians and attacking Western targets. In June, gunmen killed two policemen next to the pyramids.
