$4 billion Versailles-style gambling complex to open

Macau is capitalising on the Chinese love of gambling by building new attractions to keep them coming.

This city on the edge of China already has its own version of Venice, complete with Rialto Bridge and Grand Canal. Its own Eiffel Tower and a massive $4 billion gambling complex based on the Palace of Versailles are being constructed.

The Versailles project, called the Lisboa Palace, is scheduled to open in 2017 with 700 gambling tables and three hotels including properties carrying the names Versace and Lagerfeld.

Dozens of cranes are at work on a stretch of reclaimed land, while some of the world’s biggest casino operators are entering the city. Macau now dwarfs Las Vegas as a gambling hub.
