French Riviera reels from terror attack

Death toll rises after truck slams through crowds
Bastille Day celebrations in Nice, southern France, erupted into chaos and carnage late last night when a truck ploughed through crowds of families who had gathered on the promenade. At least 84 people have been killed, including children.
A single driver armed with weapons was behind the attack, careering the lorry for two kilometres along the Promenade des Anglais at around 23:00 local time, before being stopped and shot dead by police.
A state of emergency in place since November’s Paris attacks had been due to come to an end but has now been extended by three months. President Francois Hollande said the incident was of “an undeniable terrorist nature”.
“France is badly hit,” he said, adding “we need to do everything we can to fight against” these attacks. “All of France is under the threat of Islamic terrorism”. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
French flags are flying at half-mast today, and events in Nice such as the city’s jazz festival have been cancelled.
