Capacity to be boosted by another 25mn pax per year
Construction is due to start in 2015 on the first phase of a new expansion of Frankfurt Airport. The city of Frankfurt has approved a building application by airport operator Fraport for a much-debated new Terminal 3.
Fraport estimates the investment cost of the new terminal at Europe’s third-biggest airport will be in excess of €2 billion for the initial phase.
It expects its current maximum capacity of around 65 million passengers a year to be reached by 2021. The new terminal would add capacity for another 25 million passengers a year.
Anti-expansion campaigners say the airport already creates too much noise and are disappointed by the decision – especially as the state of Hesse has a new ruling coalition of conservatives and greens. Nevertheless, the project still has to undergo a demand assessment.
