Counter-terrorism experts work with Egyptian authorities
Pressured by the travel industry, the UK says it is working “actively and urgently” to resume flights to the popular Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh following an evacuation of tourists in the wake of the Russian air disaster over the Sinai on October 31.
A delegation of aviation and counter-terrorism experts is working with Egyptian authorities in Cairo on a plan to tighten security and allow flights to resume.
“Our talks have shown very encouraging progress,” assured British Ambassador to Egypt John Casson. “We now have a strong basis to agree a shared plan in the days ahead, and to return British flights as soon as possible.”
Sharm el-Sheikh is a major destination for British, Russian, German and other tourists. Charter and low-cost carriers such as easyJet, Thomas Cook Airlines and Tui’s Thomson Airways perform regular flights there.
