New Delhi court convicts five of nine alleged attackers
Five men were found guilty today of the gang-rape of a Danish tourist in New Delhi in January 2014, a crime that damaged India’s tourism reputation and threw its record on sexual violence back into focus.
The five were convicted for the rape and robbery of the 52-year-old woman, who was attacked at knifepoint after losing her way in central New Delhi.
Travelling alone, the woman was returning to her hotel after visiting the Taj Mahal and approached a group of men for directions. The assault was the latest in a series of sex attacks on foreigners in India.
“I pronounce all the accused guilty. Arguments [against sentencing] to be held on June 9,” Judge Ramesh Kumar told the court in Delhi.
A sixth alleged attacker died before the trial ended, while three more are being tried separately in the juvenile justice system.
