Newly sculpted property now open in northern Sweden

The first photos have emerged from the newly sculpted Icehotel, which opened on December 15 on the riverbank in Jukkasjärvi, northern Sweden.

The 35 uniquely designed suites include a frozen jungle of tropical monstera plants, a gigantic mountain gorilla, a protective ‘queen of the north’ and a ‘dreamland’ cloud.

New this season are activities like a Northern Lights tour by snowmobile, a half-day tour by dog sled, ice sculpting, Arctic yoga, a sauna ritual and a ‘wilderness dinner’.

At the icy property itself, Michelin-awarded chef Alexander Meier presents a 12-course menu focusing on local produce such as fir sprouts, cloudberry and sea buckthorn.

There is also a new Ice Ceremony Hall for weddings, engagements, vows and events, plus an ice bar and an ice gallery.

Ice artists
Creating the rooms were 36 artists from 17 countries as distant as Mongolia, Ecuador, Argentina and Ethiopia. Pictures can be seen here.

Icehotel #28 can be experienced until April 15 next year, after which the recently opened permanent part of the hotel offers solar energy-powered ice and snow experiences all year round.

“We have created the 28th rendition of Icehotel this year and I think we’ve managed to refine the Torne River better than ever. The art is exceptional with a great variation and we are looking forward to welcoming guests from all over the world,” says creative director Arne Bergh.
