Wildfires rage in hotspots of Corsica and Provence
Homes, campsites and resorts are under threat from raging wildfires that are engulfing hundreds of hectares of scenic countryside in tourist hotspots in France.
Thousands of firefighters are battling to save homes and around 1,000 camping plots have been evacuated in southern France and Corsica. Strong winds are feeding the flames.
Almost 1,000 hectares of forest have already burned in Corsica, while a further 860 hectares have been destroyed in Vaucluse, in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur.
In Bormes-les-Mimosas near Saint-Tropez, around 10,000 people have been evacuated and tourists on the beach have been watching aircraft drop water on the flames.
In Corsica, around 160 people have been fighting a fire in the area of Biguglia. Another fire in the south of the island destroyed more than 100 hectares of forest near the town of Aleria before being brought under control.
