Fire destroys East Africa’s busiest airport

Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport closed

A massive fire has closed the main international airport in Nairobi, Kenya. Passengers and all airport personnel have been evacuated from the city’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and so far no one is believed to have been injured.

The cause of the fire is not clear, but reports suggest it started in the airport’s immigration offices. Apparently the blaze has devastated the arrivals and immigration areas.

The BBC reports that “fire engines are running dangerously low on water and tankers are being used to ferry water to the airport”.

Jomo Kenyatta airport is an important regional hub for East Africa. It is the hub for Kenya Airways and airlines ranging from British Airways to KLM to Emirates fly there regularly.
