Finnish airports test virtual interpreting


Chinese and Russian interpreters available on a tablet
Finnish airport operator Finavia is piloting a virtual interpreting service with the Chinese and Russian languages at its airports in Helsinki and Rovaniemi.
The digital interpreters help passengers and service providers at the airports to cross the language barrier. The project launched in July and will continue until the end of 2017.
Finavia has launched the pilot with Tulka, a Finnish mobile interpreting service. Sales and service personnel will test the service on tablet computers in different situations, particularly with Chinese and Russian customers.
“Tulka allows us to contact a professional interpreter within seconds in the form of sound and image,” says Heikki Koski, Helsinki Airport’s vice president.
The aim of this joint project is to find out the benefits of interpretation between passengers and airport service providers. One of the key metrics is the effect of this customer experience on customer numbers and sales volumes.
