But impact of Germany’s new departure tax is felt at German airports

European airports will have a difficult second half this year, statistics suggest, with airport traffic increasing by less than 1% in both Germany and the UK in August, year-on-year. The impact of Germany’s departure tax appears to be felt at the country’s airports, with traffic falling from 7% increases earlier in the year.
However, airports in Finland are seeing the fastest collective growth in Europe, according to data collated from 12 major countries across the continent. Finland was the only market in Europe to see double-digit growth in August. This is partly because Norwegian launched its new base at Helsinki Airport this summer, with Helsinki also benefitting from the arrival of Finnair’s oneworld partner American Airlines from Chicago O’Hare as well as the Finnish flag carrier’s new non-stop service to Singapore.
