Fight between South Africa trade show rivals

Clash between show organisers at Meetings Africa event

The gloves are off in a conflict between two trade shows in South Africa – one old and one new, TravelMole reports. The fight for publicity is between the new Africa Travel Week, run by Thebe Reed Exhibitions Group, and South Africa Tourism’s long-running Tourism Indaba in Durban.

South African Tourism has taken the step of banning Thebe Reed personnel from this week’s Meetings Africa trade show at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. It accuses Thebe Reed of “ambush marketing” following during the event, while Thebe Reed says South African Tourism is using “bullying tactics” to squeeze out competition.

The day before the Meetings Africa show, Carol Weaving, managing director of Thebe Reed Exhibitions Group, used her speech at a Meetings Africa (ICCA) workshop to promote the IBTM Africa exhibition during Africa Travel Week in Cape Town in May.

On the same evening, IBTM Africa hosted a cocktail event very close to where a Meetings Africa gala dinner networking event was being held.
