Australian PM Julia Gillard calls the sinking a “major tragedy”

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has called a sea ferry disaster off the coast Papua New Guinea a “major tragedy”. More than half of the victims have been rescued from the sea since the ferry sank in poor weather conditions. Eight rescue ships and three helicopters were said to be at the scene searching for more survivors.
The ferry operator, Star Ships, said it lost contact with the MV Rabaul Queen as it sailed between Kimbe and Lae in the eastern part of Papua New Guinea.
