Families turn to crowdfunding to save holidays

Customers left penniless after tour operator collapse
Following the collapse of budget tour operator Lowcostholidays, some of the 140,000 customers who have suddenly found themselves without a vacation have turned to crowdfunding to pay for new trips.
Families are appealing for money from friends and family to give them the hard-earned holiday they had been looking forward to.
Lowcostholidays suddenly going into administration on July 15 left 27,000 customers stranded abroad and 110,000 with worthless future bookings. It was later revealed that customers in the UK may receive as little as £7.78 (€9.30) compensation each, as the company, based in the Balearics, is not covered by UK protection.
One of the relatives of those hit is Beverly Smith, who set up a page on GoFundMe.com to save her sister’s honeymoon, an all-inclusive trip to Spain.
“Every penny they received on their wedding day last year they saved and booked a family ‘honeymoon’ for them and their two boys,” she wrote. “The company have effectively stolen all the money and they have lost their honeymoon.”
