Among other players is Hurtigruten, to get two new ships
As many as 17 new expedition ships have been ordered by various lines for delivery between 2018 and 2021, according to Cruise Industry News’ 2017 Expedition Cruise Market Report.
The orders represent six established brands, plus a company that until now has mainly chartered to tour operators.
Predominant among these is Silversea, which has gone to four expedition vessels from just one, buying existing ships and, this autumn, converting the Silver Cloud for Polar use. Also among them is Hurtigruten, which will get two new ‘hybrid’ expedition ships.
Expedition cruise makes up less than 1% of the global cruise market but is growing fast and represents more brands than any other segment of the mainstream cruise industry.
The French company Ponant may have been ahead of the game, quickly building four Boreal-class luxury expedition vessels between 2009 and 2013. It has four more, slightly smaller ships, joining the fleet in 2018-19.
The new capacity is due to an aging population with money to spend who have already cruised, and the high per-day rates and low port costs.
