Newspaper list 10 of the best waterside holiday cabins
Romantic hideaways, back-to-basics eco-huts, treehouses and high-spec shacks for lapping up nature by lakes, rivers and fjords – most of the Nordic countries get a mention in the top 10 waterside holiday cabins in Europe.
Kolarbyn eco-lodge in Sweden is a back-to-nature eco-lodge without electricity or running water, in wooden huts with sheepskin rugs and candles. Two minutes’ walk from Lake Skärsjön and surrounded by forest, the 12 huts sleep two in traditional charcoal-burner style. A cabin retreat in Sweden’s Värmland also gets a mention.
In Finland, Lakeside Nightingale in Saimaa is “a stunning setting for an escape”. By Lake Puruvesi with its “incredibly clean water”, it is close to a conservation area and the world’s largest wooden church, in nearby Kerimäki.
In Norway, four quaint, red-painted wooden Nordic cabins are on a small bay in Flam, Aurland. With “snow-capped peaks coated with deep green pine forests all around”, holidaying at Fretheim Fjordhytter “is like being in a Christmas card”.
In rugged Icelandic terrain, wooden Villa Lola is on the furthest inland tip of Eyjafjörður , the longest fjord in Iceland. Other countries with idyllic cabins in the list include Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Portugal and France. All are available on Airbnb.
