Museums, parks, libraries and other public sector bodies can apply
All public areas throughout the European Union are now eligible to install wireless internet access points for free. The EU Council of Ministers revealed yesterday that it would fund at least 6,000 free wifi points by 2020 under a scheme called WiFi4EU.
Museums, parks, libraries, hospitals, local municipalities and other public sector bodies can apply for funding to install an access point where there is no private or public connection already.
The EU can provide 100% funding under the program, and spending could reach €120 million by 2019.
“The WiFi4EU scheme will make high-quality internet more accessible for many citizens,” said Urve Palo, Estonia’s minister for entrepreneurship and information technology. “It could even trigger a virtuous investment cycle.”
