Safety agency certifies first such device made in Europe
The European Aviation Safety Agency has officially approved the first ‘long range underwater locator device’ designed and manufactured in Europe.
The devices, known as ULDs, emit acoustic pulses allowing investigators to locate aircraft wreckage when an accident happens in oceanic areas.
ULDs were initially only attached to cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders (37.5 kHz ULD), but now an additional ULD can be attached to the airframe (8.8 KHz ULD).
The EU’s safety agency handed over the ETSO (European Technical Standard Order) certificate to Novega GmbH for its long-range ULD, the SID88.
Updated European rules for air operations demand the transmission time of ULDs attached to flight recorders be extended from 30 days to 90 days by 1 January 2020 at the latest.
The same rules also require that by 1 January 2019, most large aircraft flying routes that go further than 180 nautical miles from a shoreline are equipped with an additional airframe low frequency ULD. This is a “very-long detection range ULD”, providing more effective help to reduce the time and cost of locating wreckage.
The European Union told airlines in September 2015 that it intended to impose mandatory flight-tracking following the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
