Ethiopia boasts magnificent terrain and a fascinating history
Ethiopia has the target of tripling its foreign visitors to more than 2.5 million by 2020. Encouraged by big infrastructure spending and an expansion of services, it expects economic growth of around 11% a year for the next five years.
Ethiopia lacks the beaches and safaris of neighbouring Kenya and Tanzania, but it boasts magnificent terrain and a fascinating history.
Visitor numbers have risen in excess of 10% a year for the past decade, though that is from a very low base. More than 750,000 tourists visited over the previous fiscal year, bringing in $2.9 billion for the economy.
International hotel chains are stepping up investment. Hilton signed a management deal last week to open its first hotel in Ethiopia in more than four decades, and the first Marriott serviced apartments in Sub-Saharan Africa have been unveiled in the capital Addis Ababa.
AccorHotels and Ramada are working on new projects in Ethiopia, while Sheraton, Radisson, Best Western, Golden Tulip and others are already operating in the country.
