Australia fines Emirates $10.3 million for cartel activity

Emirates Airline is facing an AUS$10 million ($10.3 million) fine for illegal cartel activity. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has fined the Middle Eastern carrier in the first of a string of cases being heard by Sydney’s federal court in the next few weeks. Cases against Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand and Thai Airways will be heard by the court from October 22. Garuda Indonesia will also be in the dock.
“The October trial will be an important milestone in our continuing fight to stop cartel conduct,” said the competition commission’s chairman Rod Sims.
The fine against Emirates is for fixing fuel, security and customs surcharges on air freight shipments between 2001 and 2006.
