Victim was experienced safari leader and photographer
An experienced Norwegian safari leader has died following an elephant attack during a safari in Malawi.
Sigurd Halvorsen, a native of Haugesund in his early 70s, had led hundreds of safaris in Africa and was also a keen nature photographer – an interest that tragically led to his death.
The critical injuries he sustained were from an incident that occurred in mid-November, after which the man was treated at a hospital in South Africa.
The Norwegian was in a safari vehicle with five others when an elephant overturned it. All six passengers escaped the accident relatively unscathed. But when the Norwegian began taking photos the elephant attacked him. He was flown to the hospital in South Africa but died last week.
