Court in Norway punishes airBaltic crew after anonymous tipoff
A court in Norway has sentenced a co-pilot at the Latvian carrier airBaltic to six months in prison after he was about to take the controls of an aircraft departing Oslo at seven times the legal alcohol limit.
The 38-year-old admitted he drank two bottles of whisky and some beer with the other crew members before leaving for Crete on August 8 with around 100 passengers on board. The cabin crew also face proceedings.
An anonymous tipoff prompted the police to stop the flight before it could depart.
The judge took into consideration the high level of intoxication, the number of people whose lives would have been endangered, the flight’s length and that he must have known his colleagues had also been drinking.
However, the pilot, aged 50, rejects some of the charges against him. His alcohol level was more than double the limit.
