Visits to country’s tourism site have more than tripled
The Disney animated hit Frozen has boosted visitors to Visit Norway’s website. Since the film premiered in November, visits to the site have more than tripled.
Also, the number of searches for flights to Norway from the USA rose by more than 150% between the end of November and the end of January, according to air travel analysts Skyscanner.
The film adapts Hans Christian Andersen’s story The Snow Queen. Even though Norway is not mentioned by the characters, the tale is set amid mountains, fjords, stave churches and the Northern Lights and the characters wear traditional costumes and have Norwegian names.
“There is great interest from abroad in the wake of the Frozen movie,” Per-Arne Tuftin, head of tourism for Innovation Norway, told the newspaper Aftenposten. “Specific figures for the number of tourist visits in the wake of Frozen are hard to get yet, but we are hoping for a marked effect in 2014.”
The movie is already one of Disney’s highest-grossing films ever, taking more than $865 million in worldwide box-office sales since its release.
