Airlines cut back on capacity on US-Cuba routes
Cuba was widely tipped to become the next big thing in the world of travel and tourism, to be one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, especially for Americans.
Airlines clamoured to fill 110 daily flights to the island. But, two years after President Obama announced a thaw in relations, the outlook isn’t so sunny.
American Airlines is cutting its flights by a quarter, Bloomberg reports, while JetBlue is downsizing the planes it uses for its Cuba flights.
There is still a legal hurdle in place for Americans, who are still blocked from visiting the island for purely tourist reasons. US credit card transactions are also not yet permitted there. And inflation in Cuba has quadrupled prices.
