Baker: “We are five aircraft down this summer”
Qatar Airways has cancelled its first A320neo and remains at an impasse with Airbus over the ongoing delays with deliveries, Reuters reports. The delays, caused by engine problems, are hitting the airline’s profits, the carrier said. But it is not seeking compensation.
The carrier said last month that the delivery hold-ups were forcing it to cut frequencies on more than a dozen routes from Doha. It has no alternative but to lease.
Chief executive Akbar Al Baker has now told reporters: “We are five aircraft down this summer. This is why we are screaming, because it is making a huge impact on my bottom line.”
He added: “We are still at an impasse. We have walked away from our first A320neo because more than a certain number of days late, so exercised a walk away clause.”
Qatar Airways is also awaiting delivery of 10 of the bigger A350s.
