Customs agents find 18-karat crown

King of smugglers’ caught at Düsseldorf airport
The ‘king of smugglers’ has been caught – and then let go – at an airport in Germany, after a gold crown was found in his luggage.
In a random search at Düsseldorf Airport, customs agents stopped a man in his forties from Iran as he was passing through the ‘nothing to declare’ exit.
Along with 600 cigarettes, the man had in his bags an 18-karat gold crown weighing 126 grams. He explained that it originally came from Afghanistan and was intended as a wedding gift for a man in Belgium. Officials estimated the crown was worth around €3,500.
The maximum number of cigarettes from non-EU countries to Germany is 200. And import duties must be paid on items worth more than €430.
The agents launched a criminal procedure against the man. But because he paid duty at the airport of €850 and a bail payment, he was allowed to leave and take his items with him.
