Disney Fantasy has rough ride, Norwegian Gem at sea
Besides all of the other transport sectors hit by Hurricane Sandy, cruise ships are also suffering. The US Coast Guard closed the port of New York on Sunday evening and cannot confirm when it will reopen. Passengers on the Disney Fantasy were given a rough ride as waves rammed it. Damage included overturned furniture, broken glass and dishware, and giftshop items being thrown to the floor. Water from the ship’s pool overflowed onto the deck and into the hallways. Guests were offered a 25% discount on their next cruise.
Cruises have been disrupted or cancelled. The closure of the Port of New York meant that the Norwegian Gem has to remain at sea until the US Coast Guard says it is safe to sail to port. Norwegian Dawn is stopping in Halifax, Nova Scotia, instead of Portland, Maine. Carnival Cruise Lines’ Carnival Glory is to riding out the storm in Baltimore, Royal Caribbean’s Jewel of the Seas in Boston, Princess Cruises’ Emerald Princess in Port Saguenay.
Cruise lines are also assessing damage at private island and beach facilities in places like the Bahamas, such as Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay, Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Cay and Norwegian Cruise Line’s Great Stirrup Cay, all of which sustained damage.
