Cruise overhaul takes wellness to Antarctica

Ocean Endeavour to offer treatments from November 2015

Cruise tour operator Quark Expeditions is claiming it is the only cruise operator in Antarctica focusing on health and wellness, following a million-dollar makeover of one of its ships.

Ocean Endeavour will replace Sea Spirit once the refurbishment is complete in November 2015, with 12 voyages already planned. Rachel Hilton, vice-president of marketing and product, said the new wellness focus means customers will be able to have massages, use a sauna, take yoga and stretching classes and subscribe to a special healthy diet as part of their cruise.

“The full menu [of treatments] is still being worked on but we see there will definitely be massage and relaxation treatments,” she said.

Single travellers will be well catered for as part of the refurbishment, with 25 single cabins installed, which will not require the payment of a single supplement. The single cabins will be one of 13 categories of accommodation that will see the owner’s suite and a range of twin and triple cabins available. New adventure activities will also be on offer, including stand-up paddle-boarding in Antarctica.

“There are boards that we’re going to be testing this coming year that are incredibly stable and put you a good bit above the water,” Hilton said.
