Lufthansa expects to return to normal schedule today
A German court has ruled that Lufthansa pilots must halt their strike. The ruling came too late for Lufthansa to revise Wednesday’s flight schedule but it expects to return to a normal schedule today.
The regional labour court in the federal state of Hesse overruled a decision made by a lower court on Tuesday evening that allowed Wednesday’s strike.
It explained that the pilots were striking not only over pay and retirement benefits but over Lufthansa’s low-cost expansion plans. As this is not part of the union’s mandate in pay talks, the strike was not legal.
On learning of the ruling, Vereinigung Cockpit, the union that organised the strike, told all pilots to return to work immediately. Union spokesman Markus Wahl said he was surprised by the ruling, but that it would not mean the end of the strikes.
