AMR to close deal by December 9 but one hurdle remains

A judge in the USA has approved a settlement that ends the opposition of regulators to a merger between American Airlines parent company AMR and US Airways. This finally gives the go-ahead for a tie-up that creates the world’s biggest airline company.

At the US Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan, Judge Sean Lane said the settlement was “fair and equitable”, adding that it was in the “best interest” of AMR’s bankruptcy creditors. AMR will now aim to close on the deal by December 9.

One last block of opposition remains, however – a group of consumers who have sued the airlines in a separate lawsuit, arguing that the deal will raise ticket prices and result in more crowded planes and more expensive inflight amenities.
