New report outlines benefits of driverless technology
S-trains in the Danish capital will be driverless by 2030, according to the country’s transport minister, Ole Birk Olesen.
A new report presented to parliament says that the switch to fully automated trains will make them more affordable, punctual and frequent.
It would also increase the mobility of society, “spurring growth and productivity without having to compromise on safety. In my mind, there is no doubt that there are real benefits regarding driverless trains,” Olesen said.
“Driverless technology on the S-trains will enable significantly more trains than today without costing society more money. It would even be possible to let the trains drive 24 hours a day, as we are already familiar with the Metro. It would be a great benefit to many people.”
The report says investment would be minimal as the city would have to buy new trains anyway. The project could be completed between 2022 and 2030, with an initial pilot phase on the Hellerup-Ny Ellebjerg F-Line.
