Top ten destinations in Europe for festive shopping listed

Copenhagen is the fifth best city in Europe for Christmas shopping, according to the Guardian newspaper, which lists what it thinks are the top ten destinations for boutiques, gift stores and markets at this time of year.

“Cool but cosy, the Danish capital blends the best of old and new: from castles and palaces to sleek contemporary design stores, from old-fashioned restaurants to trendy microbreweries and hip diners,” the article reads.

Its “fairytale feel” can be found at the historic amusement park Tivoli Gardens, which “is all lit up with a Christmas market”, while the “old commercial port Nyhavn is lined with stalls selling festive treats”.

Among other places, it namechecks the Illum department store, cobbled Jægersborggade in Nørrebro for shops selling vintage clothes and handmade caramel, Høj Copenhagen for homeware by small Nordic brands, or Ladyfingers for jewellery by local designers.

Pancakes and punch
To eat, Christmas pancakes, red wine punch and street food can be had at WestMarket in Vesterbro. Tivoli Corner, a new food hall with around 20 restaurants and stands has just opened. And the brewpub Brus in Nørrebro has Christmas beers on tap.

A recommended place to stay is a double at the Steel House hostel, the former headquarters of the Danish Union of Metalworkers, which opened this year.

The other cities described in the top ten are Lisbon, Lille, Ghent, Munich, Ledbury (UK), Glasgow, Vienna, Naples and Amsterdam. The article can be read in full here.
