Aim is to fight negative publicity from gang violence

Companies in the private sector will invest $8.6 billion in tourism projects in Mexico over the next three years, the country’s president, Enrique Pena Nieto, says.

In a major effort to fight negative publicity from drug-related violence, the investment will focus on new hotels and refurbishing existing ones, as well as giving public spaces a facelift.

Pena Nieto is pushing to boost private investment in Mexico. This latest investment in tourism will create around 28,000 jobs directly involved in the industry and 78,000 more linked to it.

Acapulco, one of Mexico’s most famous beach resorts, has become one of the most violent cities in the Americas over the past three years, Reuters reports.
