Iberia, assisted by the Spanish the wine specialist firm Todovino, has made its selection of the best Spanish wines to be offered in the May-July quarter to Business Plus passengers on its long-haul flights to the Americas and to Angola. Iberia Business Plus has become a major show window for the great variety of Spain's exquisite regional wines.
This quarter Iberia's business passengers can choose among three reds, all made with the tempranillo grape, but in quite different renderings: an elegant Rioja reserve in the classic mode though with a hint of the contemporary; a powerful Zamora red by Alejandro Fernández, the famed creator of Pesquera; and a surprising red from Uclés, in north-eastern Castilla-La Mancha. The quarter's whites are a verdejo from Rueda and an albariño from Rías Baixas, the regions where Spain's most acclaimed whites are made.
This choice of wines can be sampled aboard Iberia's long-haul flights and also in the airline's VIP lounges in Terminal 4 of Madrid-Barajas airport, accompanied in both locations by a wealth of information about the wines and the wineries of origin. Dehesa La Granja 2006 Tinto (V.T. Castilla y León). At the end of the 1990s, Alejandro Fernández, the creator of Pesquera, acquired an 800-hectare tempranillo vineyard on the banks of the Guareña river in Zamora, in the heart of the province's grape-growing area knows a “Tierra del Vino”. Since then each year he has made a red aged in American oak and manifesting the characteristic fruitiness of the mythical variety. A tasty, smooth red with balsamic notes and a real delight to imbibe.
Ramón Bilbao Reserva 2006 Tinto (D.O.Ca. Rioja). This is one of the most representative offering of one of the historic wineries of Haro. Founded in 1924, Bodegas Ramón Bilbao has performed an exemplary renovation of is its classic wine to come up with some of the best value-for-money options in its class. This reserva is living proof. With an excellent merger of wood and fruit, it is a fluid, silky, and smooth red, ready to drink and enjoy.
Quercus 2008 Tinto (D.O. Uclés). This is one of the most important reds made in Castilla-La Mancha, by the ever-trustworthy Cantarero family which has done so much to promote and publicise the small Uclés growing region, halfway between the provinces of Cuenca and Toledo. It is made with a selection of the best tempranillo grapes from the marvellous Monte Carbonero vineyard, to produce a red of remarkable expression and minerality. A red that helps us rediscover the other great Spanish tempranillos.
Montepedroso 2011 Blanco (D.O. Rueda). This is the fruit of the ambitious project undertaken in Rueda by one of the branches of the Martínez-Bujanda Rioja family. It recently opened its spectacular cellars located in the centre of the Finca Montepedroso that lends its name to the wine. Using only its own grapes from a total of 25 hectares of vineyards, it is a verdejo that evoke ripe fruit (pineapple, melon, peach) and herbs, and is slightly syrupy on the palate.
Pazo Señorans 2011 Blanco (D.O. Rías Baixas). This wine is an old friend and a favourite of Iberia's Business Class passengers. It was a pioneer in the new albariño winemaking in Galicia and has proved a highly reliable choice over the years. This vintage is a particularly elegant and delicate albariño with a hint of fennel and white fruit, full-bodied, oily, dry, and serious. Most importantly, all its elements are in perfect harmony.
