Around 200 people on board when plane is hijacked

The co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767-300 flying from Addis Ababa to Rome staged his own hijacking this morning, landing the plane in Geneva, Switzerland.

The hijacker, who was not carrying any weapons, was quickly arrested at Geneva airport and the 200 people on board were released unharmed. He had locked himself in the cockpit when the pilot went to the toilet, not long after take-off. He has now requested asylum in Switzerland.

Flight 702 departed Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, at 00:30 local time and was due to arrive in Rome at 04:40 local time. After circling Geneva for quite some time, the plane landed in Geneva at 06:00.
