CNN has shown the world that even a small country like the Seychelles can organize an event for the Community of Nations.
CNN has been showing the 2014 edition of the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria, the event that has been dubbed the “carnival of carnivals” by the international press. The 2014 edition of the Seychelles Carnaval International de Victoria that has been screened on the CNN Inside Africa program on May 16, 17, and 18 was covered by Mary Rogers, the Producer and Camerawoman, and Ian Lee, as the Correspondent who traveled to Seychelles to cover the carnival that was this year being jointly co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte, and South Africa KwaZulu Natal. As was reported by CNN, this year some 26 international delegations, including the Notting Hill Carnival of the UK, the Brazil Carnival, the Dusseldorf Carnival of Germany, the Italy Carnival, the Carnival from Indonesia, and the Trinidad&Tobago Carnival, all paraded together followed by cultural troupes from the Community of Nations.
Alain St.Ange, the Seychelles Minister responsible for Tourism and Culture is also interviewed in this CNN program explaining how the carnival has found its place on the world`s calendar of events. CNN says that Seychelles has always been known for its exceptional beauty and as a well-known holiday destination, but that today it was making noise as home to a carnival for which it is being recognized. On seeing the CNN report, Minister Alain St.Ange said of Seychelles SBC Television Network that the carnival in Seychelles is the opportunity to promote one`s country using one`s culture and in so doing, one`s people.
The April carnival in Seychelles is listed on the calendar of events of the Indian Ocean Vanilla islands alongside the Tourism Trade Fair of Madagascar in May, the Cultural&Gastronomic Festival of Comoros in August, and the Festival Liberte Metisse of La Reunion in December.
Minister St.Ange also announced on television that it has been confirmed that the 2015 UNWTO (UN World Tourism Organization) Commission for Africa (CAF) Ministerial Meeting will be held in Seychelles at the same time as the 2015 edition of the carnival. The decision was taken at the 56th session of the Commission for Africa meeting that was held in Angola last week. “This will be a great opportunity for Africa as a whole to appreciate the Indian Ocean event where one`s culture is showcased as a marketing tool for tourism destinations,” said the Seychelles Minister.
