Tourists urged to be “vigilant” about possible terror attacks in Europe

Travel advice is being extended to warnings about Christmas markets and other festive events. The UK Foreign Office is urging tourists to be “vigilant” about potential terror attacks at such places.

It has added advisory about potential attacks for visitors to both Sweden and Switzerland. The same advice already applies to popular Christmas market destinations including Denmark, Germany, France, Belgium and Austria.

“There may be increased security in place over the Christmas and New Year period, including at Christmas markets and other major events that might attract large crowds; you should remain vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities,” the advice reads.

Heightened risk
The extra caution follows the US State Department warning of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks throughout Europe over the festive period.

Last year, 12 people were killed when a Christmas market in Berlin was targeted by terrorists, then a nightclub in Istanbul was attacked on New Year’s Eve.
