Carriers will be rated, with points taken off for accidents
Foreign airlines flying to or from China have been warned that if they do not meet new safety standards they will be banned from the country.
There are currently 156 foreign carriers operating in China. They will be scored on 34 criteria such as the number of accidents, the number of safety-related complaints by customers, and compliance with rules and regulations, the Civil Aviation Administration of China says.
The carriers will then be rated on a 12-point scale, with points taken off for violations or accidents. The administration explained that similar rules are in place in the European Union and the United States and now it is implementing its own system.
