Carnival to stay dominant but MSC to double market share
There will be jostling at the top among the major players in the global cruise industry over the next 10 years, a new report reveals.
Carnival Corporation will keep its leading market share by capacity of more than 40% of the worldwide market by 2026, but this is a decrease from 44.3% this year, according to the 2016-2017 Cruise Industry News Annual Report. Royal Caribbean’s market share will decline from 24.5% to 21.9%.
The report says that Carnival’s market share erosion is because of aggressive newbuilding programs by other cruise lines and the entry of start-up Virgin Cruises, all of which is expanding the industry.
Market share for MSC Cruises, on the other hand, will effectively double, from 6.8% this year to 12.9% by 2026 – due to its aggressive newbuild program. Norwegian Cruise Line’s market share will fall slightly from 9.1% to 8.7%.
