Additional 200 job losses to 600 initially announced
After announcing 600 job losses on Monday, Cathay Pacific was clearly not done with its radical staff restructuring and added 200 more, making 800 job losses in total.
The airline is trying to save HK$4 billion (€460 million) over the coming three years in an effort to return to profitability. But anger is now rippling through the airline, as no department has been spared except pilots and cabin crew.
A “challenging business environment” and changing customer habits are the reasons being given for the airline’s biggest job losses in 20 years. It posted grim stats earlier this year.
The “tough but necessary” transformation plan is “the right thing to do for the long-term future of our business and our customers”, said the airline’s new chief executive Rupert Hogg.
