Work begins on new US$180 million terminal but is it too late?

The international airport in Thailand’s thriving tourist destination of Phuket is forecast to handle nine million passengers in 2012, despite an existing capacity of just 6.5 million a year, prompting fears of overcrowding and delayed flights. Capacity at Phuket International Airport will likely reach critical levels this year, according to a new report by the hospitality consultancy C9 Hotelworks.
The airport saw 30% increase in passenger traffic last year. The Thai government has begun work on a new international terminal as part of a US$180 million expansion plan, but completion is not expected until 2015. And even then, with the future terminal accommodating only 12.5 million passengers, it may already be too small as soon as it opens.
