Delta receives 44,000 applications for 400 vacancies

Delta Air Lines says it has received as many as 44,000 applications for 400 cabin-crew jobs, giving the hopeful applicants a 1-in-110 chance of eventually being hired. In the first week, people were applying at a rate of two per minute. The 400 flight attendants will be hired in order to be trained and ready to fly with the world’s second-largest carrier in June, the start of the peak summer travel season. Hopefuls will better their chances if they speak Japanese, Hindi, Mandarin and Portuguese. Interviews for the posts have already begun.
“We received an incredible number of applications for these positions,” the airline’s CEO Richard Anderson said in a weekly recorded message to employees.
In November, American got 20,000 applications for 1,500 flight-attendant jobs, while in January US Airways attracted 16,500 applications for 450 vacancies. In 2010, 100,000 people applied for 1,000 job vacancies at Delta.
