Building starts on world’s biggest hotel

Mega Mecca hotel to have 10,000 rooms and 70 restaurants
Construction has started on what will be the world’s largest hotel. The Abraj Kudai in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, will have 10,000 rooms, 12 towers with helipads on the top, 70 restaurants, a shopping mall, a giant convention centre and whole floors set aside exclusively for royalty. The cost of the project, due for completion in 2017, is estimated at $3.5 billion.
Ten of the 12 towers will be rated four-star, the other two providing five-star accommodation. One tower will have one of the biggest domes in the world. The overall structure, its architects say, will be an homage to this sacred land.
Designer Dar Al Handasah is behind the project, while London-based hotel design firm Areen Hospitality is responsible for the upscale interiors.
“We are honoured to be trusted with such a challenge,” said Areen’s head of design, Andrew Lindwood. “Designing hotel interiors on such a massive scale, with no operators yet in place, requires complex programming and design resourcing.”
