Bornholm aims to boost wedding tourism

More investment needed to promote wedding tourism
Bornholm has great potential as a wedding destination for non-Danes, a new report says, something that is giving inspiration to the body funding its tourism marketing.
Last year, just 126 foreign couples got married on Bornholm, compared to almost 3,000 on the island of Ærø, south of Funen. Ærø has marketed itself successfully as an ideal wedding destination for years – something Bornholm would like to emulate.
The report, by the Centre for Regional and Tourism Research, says the Baltic Sea island has plenty of potential to do so. Bornholm’s Commerce and Employment Committee believes in the potential and is promising more funds to promote the island in this way.
But there is a lot to do before the vision can become reality, the report stresses, with most foreigners declaring their wedding vows on Bornholm for legal reasons rather than the island’s charms.
“Most of the wedding ceremonies [take place here] to obtain a visa or residence in the country,” Pernille Lydolph, the head of tourist agency Destination Bornholm, tells news site DR. “It is easy to get married in Denmark, so it’s the legal system and not Bornholm that matters to them.”
