Police are investigating the cause of the accident
A locally hired power boat carrying 23 cruise passengers and three crew in Greenland sank on Sunday, plunging the people on board into freezing waters. Fortunately everyone was rescued.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident, but witnesses say the vessel operating in Ilulissat Icefjord struck something in the water before sinking.
The passengers were rescued by nearby local boats and by inflatable boats belonging to the cruise ship, L’Austral, operated by French cruise line Compagnie du Ponant, which was located about 100 metres away.
“Everyone was saved and they are doing okay,” Ilulissat’s acting police commissioner Sebastian Bech said. “All of the passengers are back on their ship.”
Ilulissat Icefjord is Greenland’s most visited tourist destination. No other vessel was involved in the incident, investigators say.
