Big rise in tourism to Nordics from China

Nordics’ key selling point seems to be clean air

An insight into incoming tourism trends has been provided by Statistics Sweden, which has revealed that the number of visitors from China has increased by 62% since 2008. There has been a rise of more than 20% just in the last year. And Scandinavia’s key selling point appears to be clean air.

“Something we hear a lot on our travels is that Chinese people think it’s clean in Sweden and that you can breathe clean air,” Ann Lydner, business manager at Scandinavian Perspectives told Sveriges Television (SVT).

Chinese visitors made 158,000 overnight stays in Sweden in the June-to-September period, a rise of 22% on the same period last year.

Now more Chinese visit Sweden than any other non-European nationality except for citizens of the USA. Most travel in groups with an average stay of nine to ten nights, according to.

The majority also visit Norway and in summer, although a new trend is emerging for trips to Swedish and Finnish Lapland in winter.

“Sweden is well known in China for its welfare model, healthy and modern lifestyle, and being clean and environmentally considerate,” VisitSweden CEO Thomas Brühl told SVT.
